Mobilize Your Marketing Mix

In case it’s somehow escaped you, we’re living in the era of the smartphone.  Is there any item more indispensable than your BlackBerry, iPhone, or (for more and more of us) Droid?  Smartphones are digital security blankets (some of us have more than one), status symbols, and, for better or for worse, the first thing many of us pick up every morning.

Well, if you sleep next to your smartphone, of course it’s easier to grab in the morning.  Yep, two-thirds of smartphone users do that.  And, 33% of our fellow citizens would rather have no sex than no mobile phone for one week (1).

Mobile marketing is hot, particularly smartphones.  The Pew Research Center reported that 35% of Americans own a smartphone (2).  That’s more than 100 million people.  On a typical day, 68% of all smartphone owners go online using their phone. Continue reading

Winning Lessons from US Women’s Soccer

I will do what’s best for my team, no matter what.

I guess I’ve just always thrived in pressure situations.

Teamwork.  Leadership. Motivation.  Even though these words are sometimes overused, they are nonetheless critically important to the success of any team or organization.

So, today we have to stop and congratulate Abby Wombach and the rest of the US Women’s World Cup team for their incredible quarterfinal victory over Brazil on Sunday.

Playing 10 versus 11 for most of the match, the US team mounted an amazing comeback to tie the score in the waning seconds, and then win on penalty kicks.  If you know anything about soccer, the crossing pass from Megan Rapinoe leading to the header for goal by Abby Wombach was a fantastic sports play (see for yourself here).  But I’ll leave the soccer analysis for the sports pages.  As a former athlete turned businessman, what really stood out to me was the teamwork, mindset and leadership. I like this guy.

That’s my reaction whenever I read about United CEO Jeff Smisek’s leadership and management philosophy.  There’s a certain wow factor because he comes across so straightforward and genuine, without the jargon and BS.  Smisek is a refreshing difference, which is why he stands out.

Here are a few nuggets from a recent Fortune magazine interview with Geoff Colvin.  See what you can adopt for your team and company.

Be Direct

One of the things I learned in the Continental turnaround is to treat people like you want to be treated. You’re honest and direct with them. If someone comes to you with a silly idea, you don’t pat them and say, “Oh, yeah, that’s interesting, I’ll consider it.” You say, “No, I disagree,” and you tell them why. Continue reading
